Friends & Fiction: Episode 318 – Lynn Cullen & Priya Parmar

Lynn Cullen & Priya Parmar

On this episode, Ron Block & Patti Callahan Henry welcome two authors both with new novels about Hollywood icons—Lynn Cullen with hers about Marilyn Monroe, When We Were Brilliant, and Priya Parmar with hers about Katharine Hepburn, The Original. Priya Parmar is the author of the novels Exit the Actress and Vanessa and Her Sister, a New York Times Notable Book, who also writes for musical theater. Her stunning new novel, The Original, plunges into the tumultuous life of screen icon Katharine Hepburn, a star whose passionate spirit and fluid sexuality shattered Hollywood’s rules and redefined what it meant to be a woman in film. Lynn Cullen is the nationally bestselling author of Mrs. Poe and The Woman with the Cure. Her dazzling new novel, When We Were Brilliant, is about the unlikely pair—blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe and serious photographer Eve Arnold—who made a deal that would change both of their lives. We are so excited to talk to both authors about these fascinating new books which paint a vivid picture of two iconic women and their fierce struggle for independence and authenticity in Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Latest News from the Fab Four!

MARY KAY ANDREWS and family hosted granddaughter Molly’s pre-prom picture party last weekend—with 26 high schoolers and their parents, then the next morning hopped down to Fort Myers, Florida to speak at a fun luncheon at the Sidney & Berne Davis Arts Center. In between, she released details for her first two launch events for ROAD TRIP, which is out June 2. Buy tickets for the May 31 Atlanta launch party here. And join the F&F team including Patti Callahan Henry, Kristin Harmel, Meg Walker and Ron Block LIVE in Savannah on June 3. Buy tickets here.

KRISTIN HARMEL had a whirlwind weekend at the incredible Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, where she got to hang out with lots of favorite authors (Shelby Van Pelt, Jo Piazza, Sarah Mlynowski, Paula McLain, Allison Winn Scotch, Cynthia d’Aprix Sweeney, Thrity Umrigar, Milo Todd, Meredith Maran, Hannah Dasher, and S.A. Cosby, just to name a few), plus see several LA-based friends. This is definitely a festival to put on your list for the future; it was a booklover’s dream! Then Kristin celebrated coming home by chaperoning her son Noah’s elementary school band concert (Noah killed it on trumpet!). This week, if you’re in the Tampa Bay Area, catch her headlining the Tarpon Springs Book Festival this Saturday at 10am in downtown Tarpon Springs!

KRISTY WOODSON HARVEY is gearing up to leave for the SUMMER STATE OF MIND tour in just 8 days! What?! She is so excited to see so many of you on tour. She will be in NC, SC, FL, MO, IN, CA, and WA, so check out her full schedule to see if she’s in a town near you! She is hosting a fabulous giveaway over on Instagram right now – and there’s a HUGE Goodreads giveaway going on now too! She is so excited to pre-launch this one LIVE on Friends & Fiction next week, on April 29. You won’t want to miss that episode!

PATTI CALLAHAN HENRY had a wild NYC weekend of travel and fun as the co-chair of the Authors Guild Foundation Gala. It was truly electric and amazing with speeches that made us all cry from people like Percival Everett, Carla Hayden and Amy Tan. We passed our fundraising goal and had a blast doing it. It was amazing to see a year’s worth of work unfold in that room. Author pals and good friends joined the party and Patti’s whole team was there too – publisher, agent, and so many more, as well as our beloved Meg Walker and Ron Block. Check out her instagram for photos!

Latest News from the Fab Four!

MARY KAY ANDREWS spent “spring break” at their vacation home on Tybee Island, where the wind was blowing 30 mph and the temps hardly got above 65 degrees which ruled out beach time. So instead she and Mr. MKA worked on spiffing up Ebbtide for an upcoming Homeworthy shoot. She “might” have scored some great stuff at a Savannah estate sale. And she definitely enjoyed a night with a live event with comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short, two very funny wild and crazy guys.

KRISTIN HARMEL is off to Los Angeles this weekend for the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, where she’s looking forward to hanging out with Friends & Fiction faves Jo Piazza, Paula McLain and Shelby Van Pelt (among others) and to seeing people like Sarah Jessica Parker (squee!), Margaret Atwood, David Duchovny, Mark Harmon, Tom Selleck, and many more speak at the festival. If you’re in Southern California, drop by and see Kristin speak on a historical fiction panel with Paula (and author Milo Todd, moderated by Meredith Maran) on Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Tickets available here. (They’re only $7.50!)

KRISTY WOODSON HARVEY had an amazing week in the Bahamas with her family celebrating her dad’s birthday—and cannot believe SUMMER STATE OF MIND releases in less than three weeks! She has been busy, busy, busy signing books for both the Friends & Fiction subscription box and the Nantucket Books exclusive preorder. (There are a few of each left it you want one!) She cannot wait to see so many of you on tour. Check out her full schedule HERE.

PATTI CALLAHAN HENRY has been from SC to NC and back again with a series of work and family events. She celebrated her parents’ 88 and 89th birthdays with them, and then spent a few days in the mountains where her 2027 book is set before returning to the Lowcountry for a writing weekend with some writer pals, kayaking the May River, and taking long walks in this gorgeous spring weather. And then onto NC again for a gorgeous sold out event for the Union County Library Spring Tea. Now it’s time to hunker down at home!

Friends & Fiction: Episode 316 – V.E. Schwab & Cat Clarke

V.E. Schwab & Cat Clarke

On this episode, Kristin Harmel, Patti Callahan Henry & Mary Kay Andrews welcome this month’s F&F Featured Authors, #1 NYT-bestselling novelist V.E. Schwab and screenwriter and YA author Cat Clarke to discuss their new locked-room thriller (co-written as Evelyn Clarke), The Ending Writes Itself, our April 2026 Pick of the Month, which Stephen King has proclaimed as “in the running for best mystery of 2026!” V.E. Schwab is a #1 New York Times bestselling author known for her genre-defying works like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and the Shades of Magic series. Cat Clarke is a screenwriter and author known for her gripping, coming-of-age thrillers that appeal to readers of all ages. Friends for more than fifteen years, they’ve joined forces as Evelyn Clarke to deliver The Ending Writes Itself, a propulsive psychological thriller that doubles as a razor-sharp satire of the publishing industry. In this book, six struggling writers are invited to the estate of one of the world’s bestselling novelists on a remote Scottish island for what they think is a writers’ retreat. When the reclusive genius author turns out to be dead with his final book left unfinished, these writers are thrust into a high-stakes 72-hour competition to craft an ending in return for a life-changing sum of money and the promise of a career-defining relaunch. We had so much fun talking to this duo about their buzzy new book that Karin Slaughter declares “an absolute must-read!”

Friends & Fiction: Episode 315 – Best of Re-Airing: Kristin Harmel

Best of Re-Airing: Kristin Harmel

For Easter week, we are re-airing one of our favorite episodes from the vault! Join us as Kristy Woodson Harvey, Patti Callahan Henry & Mary Kay Andrews talk to our own Kristin Harmel about her 2025 instant NYT-bestseller, The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau—about two jewel thieves, a priceless bracelet that disappears in 1940s Paris, and a quest for answers in a decades-old murder—which is out in paperback this week. One of the founders and hosts of Friends & Fiction, Kristin is the New York Times, USA Today, and #1 internationally bestselling author of more than a dozen novels, including The Forest of Vanishing Stars and The Book of Lost Names, whose books are published in more than thirty languages and are sold all over the world. On June 11th of last year, the Fab Four gathered to celebrate the launch of Kristin’s The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau, a book that Hazel Gaynor called a “dazzling diamond of a novel,” and which instantly debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. Now is the perfect time to re-air this episode as the book releases in paperback on March 31st. We hope you will tune in for this chat, now with a brand-new intro recorded by Kristin herself.

Friends & Fiction: Episode 314 – Virginia Evans & Allen Levi

Virginia Evans & Allen Levi

On this episode, the full F&F family — Mary Kay Andrews, Kristin Harmel, Kristy Woodson Harvey & Patti Callahan Henry — gathers to welcome this month’s F&F Featured Authors, the #1 NYT-bestselling Virginia Evans to discuss her epistolary novel of connection and daring, The Correspondent, and the #1 NYT-bestselling Allen Levi to discuss his endearing story of anonymous generosity, Theo of Golden. These are our TWO March 2026 Picks of the Month in one fabulous double whammy episode! BOTH of these debut novels are #1 NYT-bestselling phenomena, BOTH are Katie Couric Book Club picks, and BOTH can attribute their overwhelming success to pure old-fashioned word-of-mouth buzz. In The Correspondent, Sybil Van Antwerp writes daily letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. In Theo of Golden, Theo gifts portraits to strangers in exchange for hearing their stories. Both novels shine a light on the importance of human connection, the power in acts of kindness, and the ability of art and literature to open our hearts and minds. What has attracted millions of readers to these two stories—and to their quirky elderly main characters—at this particular moment in time? We can’t wait to dive in with these incredible first-time novelists who’ve taken the reading world by storm and hear all about their amazing breakout books that no one saw coming but everyone adores.
